General Fortune Reading: When You Have No Specific Question

Conventional Liu Yao begins by picking a focal line: the Officer line for jobs, the matching line for romance. A general-fortune cast breaks that rule. With no specific matter to anchor on, no focal line is assigned — and that does not leave the hexagram unreadable. The tradition supplies a substitute: take the Self line as "me", and the overall generation-and-control pattern of the cast as "the matter".

Start with the frame. The month branch sets the seasonal backdrop that colors every line; the day branch carries more weight still, able to generate, control, clash or combine with any line in the cast — the classics call the day branch the presiding authority. Read month and day against the Self line first: support means force behind you, attack or drain means you are running weak right now. One glance splits "my luck is bad" into two discussable questions — is it me, or is it the circumstances.

Then come the moving lines. In a cast with a focal line, movement is read against that line. In a general cast, the moving line is the event itself. Whichever line moves hints at the kind of matter heading your way: a moving Wealth line points to money moving in or out, a moving Sibling line to spending and rivalry, a moving Officer line to pressure and disputes. Here the moving line is the hexagram pointing at the thing you could not put into words.

The Self line stands for the person asking and is the first thing to examine. A strong Self line means you are in form, with enough footing to plan ahead and act. A weak one means you are depleted: hold position rather than push, and rebuild your state before you expand. A Self line that sits void says your attention is elsewhere, and the fortune being reported reflects mood more than fact.

The Response line sits opposite the Self line and stands for your environment — other people and external conditions. Mutual generation or combination between Self and Response means you and your circumstances are pulling together, with little friction. Mutual clash or control means the environment is draining you and the friction comes from outside. Should the Response line take a day-branch strike at the Self line, expect one visible jolt from outside and watch the dates around it.

Only the two together yield a verdict. Strong Self, supportive Response: a smooth configuration in which you and your situation agree. Weak Self, hostile Response: the situation presses on you, so stop forcing plans — shed load first, then position. Strong Self, hostile Response: you are not the problem, the surroundings are, and the outcome turns on routing around the drain. Liu Yao hands you a structure, not a vague good or bad.

Self and Response give you the trend; the Six Animals supply the detail. They are the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, Gou Chen, Coiling Snake, White Tiger and Black Tortoise, assigned to the six positions by the day stem of the cast. They act as adjectives rather than actors — they never decide success or failure, they tell you where things run smoothly and where they snag.

The usual supporting readings: Azure Dragon covers celebration, proper channels and good cheer, and on the Self line it often marks a smooth stretch or a helpful patron. Vermilion Bird covers arguments, paperwork and the flow of messages, so on the Self line expect friction over words. Gou Chen covers land, entanglement and long delays. The Coiling Snake covers false alarms and back-and-forth. The White Tiger covers injury and illness — watch health and safety when it sits on the Self line. The Black Tortoise covers what is hidden and what quietly leaks away.

A final boundary: a general cast is an overview, not an itemized list. It answers "how strong am I, and how favourable is the outside world" — it cannot answer "should I change jobs" or "should I marry", which need their own focal line. Split major decisions into separate casts. A hexagram is a reference, not a verdict, and it cannot stand in for your own judgement or action.

Hexagram: Parents line (Chen Earth) holds the Self, strengthened by a Si Fire month and a Xu Earth day, so the Self line is strong; a single moving Wealth line (Hai Water) generates the Self; the Response line carries the Black Tortoise and stays still.

A strong Self line says your own state and resources are intact — you are not short of force right now. Parents on the Self line means your mind is wrapped up in tasks, paperwork and obligations: a labouring configuration rather than a losing one. The single moving Wealth line generating the Self is money and resources drifting toward you — an incoming sum, or someone arriving with backing; take it rather than push it away. The catch sits on the Response line with the Black Tortoise: information from the other side is opaque, and terms may not all be on the table. Verdict: the next three months trend upward and you are not the weak party — what is missing is verification. Check anything involving money or partnership first, then split "should I take this deal" into a cast of its own.
