Love Readings with Liu Yao: Which Line, Which Way

Rule one: the Self line is always the person casting. That makes gender part of the method — a man reads the Wealth line as the focal line for his partner, a woman reads the Officer Ghost line. Cast on the same relationship, two people can fairly arrive at two different readings, because the hexagram holds only two positions: "me" and "the other". Asking vaguely about "us" leaves the reading nowhere to stand.

Rule two: the question has to be specific. "How is my love life?" gives the hexagram nothing to grip. A workable question carries a subject, an object and a horizon: "Will things with her settle down this half-year?", "Does he still have feelings for me?", "Is this fight going to end us?" Ask while the outcome is genuinely open and the reading is dense with signal; ask after it has resolved and all you get is comfort. And leave other people's relationships to them — casting for a friend uses a different method and is an easy way to misread a hexagram.

Picking the focal line comes first. For a man, the Wealth line is both the specific person — girlfriend, wife — and the state of the bond itself. For a woman, the Officer Ghost line carries the same double role for a husband or boyfriend. Alongside it stands the Response line, the line facing the Self: it is the other person's overall posture and the far end of the relationship. The focal line tells you about the person; the Response line tells you about the position they occupy. Read them together or risk misjudging both.

Then weigh strength and interaction. A focal line fed by the month and day branches is strong: the other person is in good shape and the bond has foundation. Void, broken, or under attack, the heart has likely moved on. A focal line generating or combining with the Self means feeling flowing toward you; the Self generating it means you are the one giving. Two older cautions complete the picture: in a man's reading a moving Brothers line attacks the Wealth line — a rival, or money driving a wedge; in a woman's reading a moving Children line attacks the Officer Ghost — pickiness and cooling that quietly wear the bond down.

For staying or parting, the pattern of the whole hexagram outweighs any single line. The eight Six Combination hexagrams, such as Tai (Peace) and Fu (Return), pair every line into a bond — they speak of holding together, of tenderness that has not quite died, and in a reunion question they tilt the odds toward opportunity. The ten Six Clash hexagrams — the eight pure doubled hexagrams plus Wuwang and Dazhuang — set every line against its partner: they mark breakups that arrive fast, disagreements going public, bonds thinning out even while nobody has yet raised their voice.

In practice three steps are enough: read the focal line's strength for the other person's intent; read Self and Response for whatever connection remains; read the hexagram's pattern — combinations or clashes — for the relationship's underlying color. Most love readings then resolve into a direction: continue, slow down, or let go. One thing must be said plainly: a hexagram is a reference, never a verdict. The Wealth line sitting on the Self says the bond has not left the hexagram — she is still tied to you. Fu is a Six Combination pattern, every line paired: the single most favorable setting for the word "reunion". Self and Response combine, so a channel between you still exists; you are not strangers. The friction sits on the Response, a Brothers line — the line of obstruction — and it quietly attacks the Self: what stands between you is unspent resentment, or some practical factor that got in the way. Verdict: the window is real, but pushing hard is the wrong move. Dissolve the grievance first, then talk about the relationship. If a later cast returns a Six Clash pattern with the focal line void and broken — that is the true end of it.
